LED lighting installed on main Newbury road

Street lights in Newbury have been replaced with LED units to save money and make them more environmentally friendly.

West Berkshire council said new technology meant LED lights were now powerful enough to be used on major traffic routes.

Up until now the LED lighting had only been used on lamp columns in residential streets in the town.

The street lights have been fitted along the Sandleford Link on the A339.

The brighter energy-efficient lamps were also expected to be a benefit to drivers as they provide a more directional and therefore better quality light.

West Berkshire council said the new lights would save money as the average lifespan of a sodium lamp was only four years.

The new LED units last for 25 years and also use less energy which will cut maintenance costs.
